How do Espresso Machines Work
Espresso machines are purpose engineered and manufactured for brewing espresso coffee. The price for an espresso machine depends on the type; brand and model. Each type of espresso machine varies in size and feature list. In the marketplace you will generally find five different types of espresso machines.
Manual Espresso Machines
Manual espresso machines require the user to manually start each process step of brewing an espresso coffee. The machines feature a lever that is manually operated to force water through coffee grinds to brew a cup of espresso. Initially, coffee grinds are packed into the portafilter with a tamper then the portafilter is attached to the espresso machine to begin the manual lever action. Manual espresso machines do not contain a pump to help in the brewing process and require a learning period and exact timing to brew a cup of espresso correctly.
Manual espresso machines suit those users who want a more authentic espresso brewing experience. Manual espresso machines can also suit student baristas. As a training tool, trainee trainee baristas get the chance to experience all aspects of the espresso brewing process while developing a fuller appreciation of the espresso coffee tradition.
Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Semi-automatic espresso machines are available from a range of manufacturers. These machines include controls for manually starting and stopping the brew process and a pump for aiding in the brewing process. Semi-automatic machines require you to add the coffee grounds, tamper the grinds in the portafilter and clean the machine when finished. Semi-automatic espresso machines do not contain a coffee grinder.
Automatic Espresso Machines
Easier to operate compared to the manual and semi-automatic machines, these machines make an espresso coffee drink with little interaction from the user.
Many coffee bars and cafes use these mostly hands-off models to make espresso coffee drinks. High volume cafes find the push-button operation convenient and fast, which is a big help in situations with constant customer flow.
Within a cafe setting, for example, the barista simply fills the portafilter with coffee grinds, tamps the grinds and uses the auto buttons to allow the machine to perform the espresso brewing phase. An automatic machine can create one or more cups, depending on the settings. The machines are capable of producing both regular espresso and decaffeinated brew styles. The final cup of espresso is ready to drink within a few seconds. A knob or preset button controls the milk steamer. This gives the barista choices over the final espresso quality. Fully automatic machines are fast, easy to learn and productive but lose the artistic side of espresso making.
Steam Driven Espresso Machines
Steam driven espresso machines are considered an older type of machine. Steam driven models use steam pressure and boiling water to make the espresso coffee. The steam driven espresso type of machine is generally less expensive than the automatic and semi-automatic machines. Depending on the model, a pump may or may not be attached to assist with forcing hot water through the coffee grounds.
Super Automatic Espresso Machines
Expensive and high-end, super automatic espresso machines contain a grinder for processing coffee grounds; automatic coffee tamping, a pump and a waste box for used coffee grinds. Super automatic espresso machines also shut off automatically and let you program how strong you want your cup of espresso.
