How do Espresso Machines Work
Espresso machines are purpose engineered and constructed for brewing espresso coffee. The price for an espresso machine depends on the type; brand and model. Each type of espresso machine varies in size and feature list. Espresso machines can be classified into five groupings.
Manual Espresso Machines
Manual espresso machines require the user to manually start each process step of brewing an espresso coffee. The machines feature a lever that is manually operated to force water through coffee grinds to brew a cup of espresso. Initially, coffee grinds are packed into the portafilter with a tamper then the portafilter is attached to the espresso machine to begin the manual lever action. Manual espresso machines do not contain a pump to aid in the brewing process and needs a learning period and exact timing to brew a cup of espresso correctly.
Manual espresso machines suit those users who seek a more authentic espresso brewing experience. Manual espresso machines also suit those in training as professional baristas for the reasons that the trainee experiences all the stages involved in the brewing process and gains an a deeper understanding of the complete espresso brewing process.
Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Semi-automatic espresso machines are available from a number of manufacturers. Automatic controls feature on this sort of espresso machine, which automate the espresso brewing phases. With a semi-automatic machine you need to add coffee to the portafilter, tamp the grounds and when complete, clean the machine. A coffee bean grinder is not usually attached in the semi-automatic type espresso machine.
Automatic Espresso Machines
Easier to operate compared to the manual and semi-automatic machines, these machines produce an espresso coffee drink with little interaction from the user.
Most cafes use the automatic type of espresso machine for making espresso drinks. High volume cafes find the push-button operation convenient and fast, which is a big help in situations with constant customer flow.
To use an automatic espresso machine, the barista grinds the coffee, inserts it into the portafilter, pushes a button and waits for the coffee cup to fill. The machines may have settings for one or more cups with different sides for regular and decaffeinated brew. A cup of espresso is produced in seconds. Included with an automatic machines is a milk steamer. This is controlled by either a knob is a preset button. The barista chooses what to use depending on the amount of control required for the final espresso quality. Fully automatic machines are fast, easy to learn and productive but lose the artistic side of espresso making.
Steam Driven Espresso Machines
The oldest type of espresso machine, steam driven models use steam pressure and boiling water to create espresso and other coffee drinks. The steam driven espresso type of machine is generally less expensive than the automatic and semi-automatic machines. Depending on the model, a pump may or may not be included to assist with forcing hot water through the coffee grounds.
Super Automatic Espresso Machines
These super automatic machines are relatively expensive when compared to other types noted above. But for the price, the whole espresso coffee making process is fully managed. The process includes; gindng the beans to produce the appropriate grind for the portofilter; tamping the coffee grinds; managing water pressure and flow, and finally removing the used coffee grinds ready for the next brew cycle. The complete espresso making cycle is fully automated by these types of machines. When finished the machine automatically shuts down.
