How do Espresso Machines Run
Espresso machines are purpose designed and constructed for brewing espresso coffee. Espresso machines vary in cost depending on the type and come in a variety of sizings with matching features. There are five types of espresso machines available for purchase.
Manual Espresso Machines
Manual espresso machines require the operator to manually start each process step of brewing an espresso coffee. The machines feature a lever that is manually operated to force water through coffee grinds to brew a cup of espresso. The coffee grinds require packing in the portafilter, referred to as tamping, before starting the brew step. Automatic and semi-automatic espresso machines feature a pump to assist the brewing process, this is not the case with a manual machine. So the espresso brewing process demands some learning and training for the operator to achieve an ideal cup of espresso.
Manual espresso machines suit those users who want a more authentic espresso brewing experience. Manual espresso machines also suit those in training as professional baristas for the reasons that the trainee experiences all the steps involved in the brewing process and gains an an appreciation of of the complete espresso brewing process.
Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Many manufactures produce semi-automatic espresso machines. These machines include controls for manually starting and stopping the brew process and a pump for aiding in the brewing procedure. You must manually supply coffee to the machines, tamp the coffee grinds in the portafilter and clean the machines after each us. Semi-automatic espresso machines do not feature a coffee bean grinder.
Automatic Espresso Machines
For users who don't want to control the brewing process, automatic espresso machines are not difficult to use, contain a pump and brew a cup of espresso without interaction from the user.
Many coffee bars and cafes use these mostly hands-off models to make espresso coffee drinks. The high demand requirements of a cafe or restaurant business means that this type of espresso machine meets that requirement with the automatic features built into the machines.
Using an automatic machine only requires the barista to add coffee grounds into the portafilter, push the auto buttons and wait for the machine to deliver the espresso coffee into the cup. An automatic machine can create one or more cups, depending on the settings. The machines are capable of producing both regular espresso and decaffeinated brew styles. The final cup of espresso is ready to drink within a few seconds. The milk steamer may have a manual knob or a pre-set button, with the barista choosing whatever is simplest at the time. Fully automatic machines are fast, easy to learn and productive but lose the artistic side of espresso making.
Steam Driven Espresso Machines
Steam type espresso machines produce coffee by the use of high pressure steam and boiled water. This design is a older type of method for making espresso drinks. These models are cheaper than the other types mentioned above, are fast to brew the espresso and may not feature a pump to aid forcing the hot water through the coffee grounds.
Super Automatic Espresso Machines
Super automatic espresso machines are a recent design development in the espresso machine marketplace. These machines manage the whole espresso process, namely: grinding the coffee beans; automatically filling the portofilter and tamping the coffee grounds; force water through the coffee grinds and dispensing the waste coffee. Super automatic espresso machines also shut off automatically and let you program how strong you want your cup of espresso.
