How do Espresso Machines Make Espresso Coffee

Espresso machines are devices specifically designed to brew espresso coffee drinks. The price for an espresso machine depends on the type; brand and model. Each type of espresso machine varies in size and feature list. In the marketplace you will generally find five different types of espresso machines.

Manual Espresso Machines

Manual espresso machines require the operator to manually start each process step of brewing an espresso coffee. Manual espresso machines feature a lever that the user manually operates to apply pressure to water forcing it through the coffee grinds to produce a cup of coffee. The coffee grinds require packing in the portafilter, referred to as tamping, before starting the brew step. Manual espresso machines do not contain a pump to help in the brewing process and needs a learning period and exact timing to brew a cup of espresso properly.

Manual espresso machines suit those users who seek a more authentic espresso brewing experience. Manual espresso machines can also suit trainee baristas. As a training tool, trainee student baristas get the opportunity to experience all facets of the espresso brewing process while developing a deeper appreciation of the espresso coffee tradition.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines

Several manufactures produce semi-automatic espresso machines. These machines feature automatic controls to begin and stop the espresso making process and a pump to aid the brewing stage. Semi-automatic machines require you to supply the coffee grounds, tamper the grinds in the portafilter and clean the machine when finished. Semi-automatic espresso machines do not contain a coffee grinder.

Automatic Espresso Machines

For users who don't want to control the brewing process, automatic espresso machines are not difficult to use, contain a pump and brew a cup of espresso without interaction from the user.

This type of espresso machine is often found in cafes and restaurants for preparing espresso drinks. High volume cafes find the push-button operation convenient and fast, which is a big help in locations with constant customer flow.

To use an automatic espresso machine, the barista grinds the coffee, inserts it into the portafilter, pushes a button and waits for the coffee cup to fill. An automatic machine can produce one or more cups, depending on the settings. The machines are capable of producing both regular espresso and decaffeinated brew styles. The final cup of espresso is ready to drink within a few seconds. A knob or preset button controls the milk steamer. This gives the barista choices over the final espresso quality. Fully automatic machines are fast, easy to learn and productive but lose the artistic side of espresso making.

Steam Driven Espresso Machines

Steam type espresso machines produce coffee by the use of high pressure steam and boiled water. This design is a older type of process for making espresso drinks. These models are cheaper than the other types mentioned above, are fast to brew the espresso and may not feature a pump to assist forcing the hot water through the coffee grounds.

Super Automatic Espresso Machines

These super automatic machines are relatively expensive when compared to other types noted above. But for the price, the whole espresso coffee making process is fully managed. The process includes; gindng the beans to produce the appropriate grind for the portofilter; tamping the coffee grinds; managing water pressure and flow, and finally removing the used coffee grinds ready for the next brew cycle. The complete espresso making cycle is fully automated by these types of machines. When finished the machine automatically shuts down.
