How do Espresso Machines Make Espresso Coffee

Espresso machines are devices specifically engineered to brew espresso coffee drinks. The type, size, brand and feature list are determining factors in the price of an espresso machine. Espresso machines can be classified into five groupings.

Manual Espresso Machines

From start to finish, manual espresso machines demand complete user interaction. Manual espresso machines feature a lever that the user manually operates to apply pressure to water forcing it through the coffee grinds to produce a cup of coffee. You must also manually pack grinds into the portafilter, known as tamping, before initiating the lever action brewing stage. The design of the manual machine means there is no steam pump engineered into these machines to assist the brewing process. Therefore, any user of a manual machine requires a learning phase to produce a cup of espresso coffee.

Potential espresso machine owners, who seek a more authentic espresso brewing experience can opt for purchasing a manual espresso machine. Manual espresso machines can also suit student baristas. As a training tool, trainee trainee baristas get the opportunity to experience all facets of the espresso brewing process while developing a deeper appreciation of the espresso coffee tradition.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines

Semi-automatic espresso machines are available from a range of manufacturers. Automatic controls feature on this kind of espresso machine, which automate the espresso brewing phases. You must manually supply coffee to the machines, tamp the coffee grinds in the portafilter and clean the machines when finished. A coffee bean grinder is not usually included in the semi-automatic type espresso machine.

Automatic Espresso Machines

Automatic espresso machines are easy to operate and automate those steps performed manually in semi-automatic machines. These types of machines also feature a pump.

This type of espresso machine is often found in cafes and restaurants for preparing espresso drinks. High volume cafes find the push-button operation convenient and fast, which is a big help in situations with constant customer flow.

To use an automatic espresso machine, the barista grinds the coffee, inserts it into the portafilter, pushes a button and waits for the coffee cup to fill. The machines may have settings for one or more cups with different sides for regular and decaffeinated strength. A cup of espresso is made in seconds. Attached to an automatic machines is a milk steamer. This is controlled by either a knob is a preset button. The barista chooses what to use depending on the amount of control required for the final espresso quality. Automatic espresso machines make espresso coffee in a fast and easy manner and are most suited to the professional cafe or restaurant situation.

Steam Driven Espresso Machines

Steam driven espresso machines are considered an older type of machine. Steam driven models use steam pressure and boiling water to make the espresso coffee. The models are inexpensive, brew a cup of espresso in about one minute and may or may not contain a pump to aid in sending water through the coffee grinds.

Super Automatic Espresso Machines

Super automatic espresso machines are a recent design development in the espresso machine marketplace. These machines manage the whole espresso process, namely: grinding the coffee beans; automatically filling the portofilter and tamping the coffee grounds; force water through the coffee grinds and dispensing the waste coffee. Super automatic espresso machines also shut off automatically and let you program how strong you want your cup of espresso.
