How do Espresso Machines Work
Espresso machines are purpose designed and manufactured for brewing espresso coffee. The type, size, brand and feature list are determining factors in the price of an espresso machine. In the marketplace you will generally find five different types of espresso machines.
Manual Espresso Machines
From start to finish, manual espresso machines need complete user interaction. Manual espresso machines feature a lever that the user manually operates to apply pressure to water forcing it through the coffee grinds to produce a cup of coffee. You must also manually compress grinds into the portafilter, known as tamping, before initiating the lever action brewing stage. Automatic and semi-automatic espresso machines feature a pump to aid the brewing process, this is not the case with a manual machine. So the espresso brewing process demands some learning and training for the operator to achieve an ideal cup of espresso.
Manual espresso machines attract those buyers who desire a more authentic espresso experience. Manual machines are also useful for training professional baristas because the trainee has the opportinity to fully appreciate each point of the brewing process and develops an deeper understanding of the complete brewing process.
Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Semi-automatic espresso machines are available on the market from a range of brand manufactures. These machines feature automatic controls to begin and stop the espresso making process and a pump to assist the brewing stage. You must manually supply coffee to the machines, tamp the coffee grinds in the portafilter and clean the machines after each us. Semi-automatic espresso machines do not contain a coffee grinder.
Automatic Espresso Machines
Easier to operate compared to the manual and semi-automatic machines, these machines create an espresso coffee drink with little interaction from the user.
This type of espresso machine is often found in cafes and restaurants for preparing espresso drinks. The easy control features of the automatic machine is useful for professional applications when there is volume demand for espresso drinks.
To use an automatic espresso machine, the barista grinds the coffee, inserts it into the portafilter, pushes a button and waits for the coffee cup to fill. An automatic machine can produce one or more cups, depending on the settings. The machines are capable of producing both regular espresso and decaffeinated brew styles. The final cup of espresso is ready to drink within a few seconds. The milk steamer may have a manual knob or a pre-set button, with the barista choosing whatever is simplest at the time. The design features of automatic espresso machines ensure that brewing espresso coffee is fast, ideal for high volume demand purposes, easy to learn how to operate.
Steam Driven Espresso Machines
Steam type espresso machines produce coffee by the use of high pressure steam and boiled water. This design is a older type of method for making espresso drinks. The models are inexpensive, brew a cup of espresso in about one minute and may or may not contain a pump to aid in sending water through the coffee grinds.
Super Automatic Espresso Machines
These super automatic machines are relatively expensive when compared to other types noted above. But for the price, the whole espresso coffee making process is fully managed. The process includes; gindng the beans to produce the appropriate grind for the portofilter; tamping the coffee grinds; managing water pressure and flow, and finally removing the used coffee grinds ready for the next brew cycle. Although these machines are high ticket items, the espresso making process is fully automated right to the final step of turing itself off.
